FreeNAS: The FreeNAS server

FreeNAS is an embedded open source NAS (Network-Attached Storage) distribution based on FreeBSD, supporting the following protocols: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, TFTP, AFP, RSYNC, Unison, iSCSI (initiator and target) and UPnP.

It supports Software RAID (0,1,5), ZFS, disk encryption, S.M.A.R.T/email monitoring with a WEB configuration interface (from m0n0wall).

FreeNAS can be installed on Compact Flash/USB key, hard drive or booted from LiveCD.

The FreeNAS 8.0.3 images file are available on SourceForge: FreeNAS 8.0.3

FreeNAS 7 image files suitable for most people are available on SourceForge: FreeNAS Stable Releases. This is where you can
download the latest, stable versions based on the original freenas source code to install on your hardware.

From 0.7.5.9496 and up the FreeNAS 7 builds are made with FreeBSD 9.0-Release, it's ZFS storage pool is upgraded to version 28 and the ZFS filesystem is version 5.

You can't downgrade ZFS after upgrade from 0.7.2 series!

2010-11-06: Security Alert, all users need to upgrade their FreeNAS to the latest stable (0.7.2.5543). If you can't upgrade: Restrict WebGUI access from trusted IP addresses. Thanks to Brian Adeloye from Tenable Network Security for reporting this vulnerability.
